This year, the high school track team had a very successful season. Both the girls and boys team won 1st overall at the Cowan meet. The girls team also placed second at several meets, including the PAAC Championship. When it comes to individual performances, almost every athlete experienced a personal PR. Freshman Sara Swinney broke the eight year old 400 meter school record with a time of 1:00.72. Sara is also a member of the record breaking girls 4x4 relay team, along with Juniors Bella Cornell and Gwynie Falcone and Sophomore Kaydence Burkhardt. They broke the record by a millisecond, with a new time of 4:20.51. The boys team broke the school 4x8 relay record with a new time of 8:52.02. The runners on this relay team are Nate Wetherall, Andrew Warner, Gavin Killion, and Zack Robinson.

Overall, the track team grew immensely throughout the season under the coaching of Chelsea Halderman and Ken Wedig. Several great freshmen came onto the team this year and pushed the upperclassman to do even better as well. The team is losing 5 seniors, Andrew Warner, Robert Bagby, Nate Wetherall, Sonny Stanley, and Jack Fraley, who have all been great leaders who always encourage others. The team is working hard and preparing for sectionals next week. The girls compete on Tuesday, May 14 and the boys compete on May 16 at Connersville High School. Make sure you wish them luck and come out to support if you are able! We are so proud of our track team for their amazing season!

Mother's Day is a time to celebrate and thank the strong, courageous mothers in our life. We celebrate it on the second Sunday of May. This year it will be on Sunday, May 12. Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia, whose mother had organized women's groups to promote friendship and health, started Mother's Day. On May 12, 1907 she held a memorial service at her late mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia. Within five years every state was observing the day. Mothers do so much for us and they deserve to be appreciated. We need to make sure we make it a special day for our moms!

Now let's see what some of the students have to say about their mothers. "She is always there for me and is my biggest supporter," Allison Hamilton, junior, says. Sophomore, Tyson Tremain says, "I love my mom because she sacrificed so much to home school me." "I love my mom because she pushes me to always do my best and she is always supportive of my goals," says senior, Sophie Coyner. "My mom is so easy to celebrate because I would not be where I am today without her. She pushes me out of my comfort zone and supports me every step of the way. She is the kindest, funniest, smartest, most hard working woman I know. She is my best friend," says Junior, Bryn VanVleet. Our mothers are such important people in our lives and they are constantly putting others first. It's time to do something special for them and thank them for everything they do.

Armed Forces Day occurs every third Saturday of May. On August 31. 1949, Armed Forces Day was created by the Secretary of Defense, Louis Johnson. This was to replace Army, Navy, and Air Force Days. Armed Forces Day originally was a type of "educational program for civilians." This was to increase awareness of the Armed Forces and expand public understanding of what type of job is performed and the role of the military in civilian life. It was a day to showcase the equipment that are used to protect civilians to civilians. It is also a day of honor for the people serving in the Armed Forces. This day is for everyone who are currently serving and who have served in the reserves, National Guard, or on active duty.

Why is Armed Forces Day in May?

The month of May represents National Military Appreciation Month starting with Loyalty Day and concluding with Memorial Day.

Celebration

To celebrate this upcoming Armed Forces Day, according to President Truman, fellow citizens "display the flag of the United States at their homes on Armed Forces Day and participate in exercises expressive of our recognition of the skill, gallantry, and uncompromising devotion to duty characteristic of the Armed in the carrying out of their missions." Another way to celebrate is to volunteer with or donating to the USO. USO is a congressionally-chartered, nonprofit organization for serving active-duty military and their families.

This Armed Forces Day, celebrate these heroes and honor their sacrifices as they have been and will always work hard for this country.
