As Thanksgiving quickly approaches and people are preparing their turkeys and decorations, this article will give everyone a history on the story behind Thanksgiving. The Mayflower, which was a small ship, carried 102 passengers from Plymouth, England in September of 1620. They were looking for a new home so they could openly express their faith in a land they would call their own, also known as the "New World." After the Mayflower landed at Massachusetts Bay, they started making a village at Plymouth. As most of the colonists were suffering from diseases, only half of the original crew survived. When March came they decided to move ashore. This is where they met a member of the Abenaki tribe. Squanto taught the Pilgrims how to plant corn, get the sap from maple trees, fish from the rivers, and how to stay away from poisonous plants. This helped the Pilgrims significantly. After the Pilgrims' first corn harvest Governor William Bradford the colonists decided to have a feast. After a while, a group of Native American allies showed up to the celebratory feast. This feast went on for three days and would be later known as America's "first Thanksgiving." Now that you know the story behind Thanksgiving I hope you can enjoy the holiday with your friends and family and get stuffed with all the food on the table!

On Tuesday, November 7, polling centers across the state opened at 6 a.m. for the general election to the public. Although voting was set to end by 6 p.m. in Wayne County, it was extended to 7 p.m. due to the power outage around Richmond Tuesday morning. The most important elections are for the City Mayor and the City Council Members.

According to the Clerk of Courts, here at the unofficial results:

With 2,717 votes (51.23%), Republican candidate, Ron Oler, defeated two-term incumbent Dave Snow. Snow, Democratic candidate, took 2,078 votes (39.18%). Ron Oler has served on the Richmond Common Council for 12 years, making him a familiar face to citizens of the Richmond area.

The election also had two other, independent candidates. Howard Price, with 408 votes (7.69%). David Carpenter, with 101 votes (1.90%).

We congratulate Ron Oler and we give him our best wishes for his success during his term as mayor.
